4-H Dairy Project
Got milk or ever wonder about the power of cheese? Spend a little time with the animal that creates all this goodness. The 4-H Dairy project is for members who want to learn more about dairy animals and who may want to care for and raise one or more female dairy animals. Members usually start with a heifer calf or yearling heifer. Older members may start with a producing cow. This project also provides you an opportunity to start with a calf and raise it to a producing cow.
Dairy Project
This project is for member’s ages 8-18 years old. This project is designed for those members who want to learn more about the dairy industry. Members usually start with a heifer calf or yearling heifer. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:
- Obtain and raise a dairy animal
- Project animals may be either grade or purebred if they are heifers. Bull calves must be registered
- Parts of a dairy cow
- Learn how to care for a dairy animal a
- Learn how to take care of equipment
- Learn about various dairy breeds
- Learn about the cost to raise a calf
- Learn how the dairy industry affects everyone world-wide
- Learn about the nutritional requirements of dairy cows
