Unit 1 :: Introduction to Leather
This unit is for member’s ages 8-18 years old. Unit 1 is a beginner’s unit that teaches leather tooling. Members do not carve in Unit 1. Older youth or those with some experience in leather carving and stamping may wish to begin in Unit 2 or 3, depending on their skills. It is possible to enroll a member in both Units 1 and 2 and let them progress as fast as their interest and skill allow. However, they must exhibit in one unit only. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:
- Use basic tools to model simple leather articles
- Select and tool two or more leather articles
- Keep accurate records of costs and skills gained

Project Exhibit Rules for All Units
- Put name, age, and county on back of exhibit board or on tag attached to individual exhibit articles.
- Indicate in record whether articles are made from kit or if self-cut and designed by the member.
- A set means a number of things of the same kind that belong, or are used together, (i.e. six matching coasters, belt and buckle with matching designs, etc.)
- Advanced leathercraft members may exhibit in more than one of the classes, provided the member is enrolled in and has completed the requirements of the unit. Example: Units 4-7.
Unit 1 :: Introduction to Leather
Exhibit will consist of the following:
A. Completed e-record presented in a sturdy binder/notebook.
B. Exhibit board 12”x18”x1/8” or ¼” (preferably pegboard) to which items are attached by means of lacing or thread:
- Three samples with labels showing:
a. Transfer of design onto leather; deepening of outline with modeling tool and use of camouflage tool.
b. Steps shown in sample1 as well as use of pear shader, beveling with modeling tool and use of veiner.
c. Steps shown in sample 1 & 2 as well as use of seeder and backgrounder. Clear leather finish applied to sample 3 (optional for samples 1 & 2). - Two completed articles using tools and skills studied in Unit 1, which included lacing (one using whip stitch lacing and the other using running stitch lacing).
Note: No carving, solid color dyeing and/or color shading will be permitted.
