4-H Geospatial Project
The G2 Exploring Spaces, Going Places geospatial curriculum offers a set of learning experiences and opportunities that will allow learners of all ages to increase their knowledge, skill, and understanding of geographic and geospatial-related ideas and problems.
Step 3: Select Your Project
The Geospatial curriculum is divided into three levels: beginners, intermediates, and advanced. These division are not age or grade-level based, but instead are based on learners experiences and skill level with geographic and geospatial topics. All levels are for Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors.
This curriculum is on a CD.
Beginner Level 1 Guide – Setting Out
This level provides many interesting and exciting challenges. Participants will learn about their “position” in the world, map-making tools and symbols, and making maps. The beginning level activities target fundamental geospatial skills concepts and skills that are best learned before learners use advanced technology.
Intermediate Level 2 –On The Trail
This level is the next step. Youth will learn how the world of geographic and geospatial data helps users understand positions and how they can be used to connect to information in different ways. Learners will interpret maps and determine what kinds of maps to make.
Advanced Level 3 –Reaching Your Destination
Youth will learn interesting and exciting skills in the Advance Level 3. Youth will learn how to describe their community through a map. As learners progress from the beginning activities to the intermediate and advanced activities, they may wish to borrow or purchase their own GPS units.
Step 4:
The items listed below are your project requirements. Select each in turn to access a Word Document. Once you have your document, please save it to your hard drive or other media before entering information.

Setting Out –Level 1
Exhibit will consist of the following:
A. Completed e-record presented in a sturdy binder/notebook.
B. Using the ‘Take Me on a Tour’ activity, create a display and map showing four to six tour sites, geo-tools used to create the map, positional data for the sites, and information about the selected sites.
- OR -
C. Using information from the “What Are Geographical Tools?” activity, prepare an exhibit showing and describing ten mapping tools. Explain how the mapping tools are used and why maps are important.
D. Posters/Maps must be presented on display board. The standardized display board size of 4 ft. x 3 ft. is to be used for 4-H projects. Exhibitors are encouraged to laminate all posters/maps or cover them with clear plastic film.
On The Trail –Level 2

Reaching Your Destination –Level 3
Exhibit will consist of the following:
A. Completed e-record presented in a sturdy binder/notebook.
B. Create a computer-generated map with layered data that provides information on a community need. Explain how the need was identified; how you gathered information; and your recommendations on how to solve the need. Use the template from “Take Me on a Tour” activity from Level 1, to gather data for the map.
C. Posters/Maps must be presented on display board. The standardized display board size of 4 ft. x 3 ft. is to be used for 4-H projects. Exhibitors are encouraged to laminate all posters/maps or cover them with clear plastic film
Group Projects (Developed by two or more 4-H members).
