IRS Tax Filing Update

We have been getting a few questions about e-Postcard filing deadlines. Please read the following closely:

Groups aligning with the calendar year of Jan. 1 – Dec. 31 may yet have to file their e-Postcard this year. (May 15 is the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of the calendar year.) The IRS is loading the thousands of 4-H organizations listed under the 4-H Group Exemption Number into their system. We have not yet been notified that it is complete. We will let you know as soon as we hear. It becomes less and less likely that they will have to file the closer we get to May 15, but it could happen.

However, most 4-H clubs have an Oct. 1 – Sept. 30 fiscal year. They will not have to file the e-Postcard until Feb. 15, 2009 (the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of their year).

Lessons from Montrose County

On April 25 I had the opportunity to attend the Montrose County 4-H Foundation Banquet in Montrose. It was a very nice event where sponsors, donors, and supporters of the Montrose County 4-H Program were thanked for their support of 4-H. There were several community leaders and elected officials in attendance. It is a great public relations event for 4-H and Extension.

The lesson I’d like to share with other counties is that they had two or three current 4-H members and two or three Montrose County 4-H alumni give five minutes speeches about how 4-H had influenced their lives. They were all great speeches and had a positive effect on the donors, sponsors and elected officials who were in attendance.

As you plan your county 4-H programs and events this year you might consider incorporating such an activity into those events. Contact Trent Hollister, Montrose County 4-H agent, at 970.249.3935 if you would like more details. — Jeff Goodwin

Western Regional Leaders’ Forum - Denver ‘09

As hosts of the next WRLF we need your help. First, we want you to promote this event as a great opportunity for training Colorado 4-H leaders. There are more opportunities for volunteers and staff to learn about programs, projects and better ways to work with youth at this event than any other. We would like to have at least 200 Colorado volunteers attend!

It’s time to start thinking about workshops for WRLF too. The Call for Proposals is posted on the WRLF link on our website - http://www.colorado4h.org/wrlf09/index.shtml. Start distributing and submitting them!

Agents received a folder with WRLF information during our retreat at Snow Mountain Ranch. There were requests to solicit financial support from 4-H clubs, councils, and foundations across the state. Please be sure to get this request out to all your organizations. This is an event sponsored by the Colorado 4-H Leader’s Council and 4-H program. We need your help!

There is also a need to solicit door prizes for WRLF. They can be non-perishable foods, gift baskets, clothing, gift certificates, etc.

Thanks in advance for all your help. The committee certainly appreciates it. Please contact me at Dale.Leidheiser@colostate.edu if you have questions.

National Youth Traffic Safety Month

National Youth Traffic Safety Month addresses the number one cause of death for youth in our nation. Every year over 6,000 youth die in traffic related crashes. Many of these crashes are caused by avoidable behavior. Youth can take specific actions to be safer as drivers and passengers. National Youth Traffic Safety Month is also a time to celebrate and promote those who work to help keep youth safe on the roads. Youth will be participating in activities to thank and support those working so hard to protect them.

Would you like to receive a $1,000 award for your efforts to reduce teen driving crashes in your community? Start working now on plans for this year!

National Organizations for Youth Safety has once again designated May as National Youth Traffic Safety Month because it is an important time for teens to be focused on driving safety. To support National Youth Traffic Safety Month and as an incentive, Allstate Foundation is awarding $1,000 to 50 local youth organizations for their youth-developed and implemented projects that demonstrate a strong focus geared towards youth traffic safety. With prom, graduation, and summer trips just ahead, youth-led teams can work together with Allstate Foundation and National Organizations for Youth Safety to decrease the number of traffic-related deaths and injuries that involve young drivers and passengers.

For more information on how YOU can be involved, visit the NYTSM Web site.
