Colorado 4-H Takes on the Blogosphere!

Colorado 4-H Blog -- Soon to come!It is widely known that one of the fastest ways to obtain fresh news content and information is through various online blogging resources. Major news organizations, as well as private individuals, administer blogs where you (the Internet user) can obtain the latest in breaking news stories. Often times, those who are a bit tech-savvy will subscribe to multiple blogs and news feeds by using a Feed Reader (RSS Aggregator); this type of software will conveniently deliver the informative content directly to the user's desktop (at least content that the user has subscribed to will be delivered). Otherwise, you can read the content of any particular blog just by going to the blog's Web address. The new Colorado 4-H blog will be linked directly from our website, so it will be easy for you to locate.

What do we plan to do with our new slice of the Web? There are often times issues that are being discussed that involve Colorado 4-H, and we would like to be able to post the latest information that surrounds some of these issues, as that information arises. Think of it as eating a hot breakfast, right out of the pan, or consider it to be the fresh catch of the day.

The new Colorado 4-H Blog will be released in the very near future so be on the lookout for it on our website: www.colorado4h.orgDarrin Goodman

IRS Reporting Requirements for 4-H Groups

An article was written in the June 8 Update, http://www.4h.colostate.edu/communications/update/2007/070608.shtml, about IRS reporting requirements that affect all groups that bear the 4-H name. We just received a fax from a county which lets us know that the IRS is doing exactly what they said they would!

Now that county fairs are in season and you’ll be seeing a lot of people in a short amount of time, please let them know that if they haven’t already received a letter from the IRS they probably will. If they don’t receive a letter, or believe the IRS may have an incorrect address, they should file Form 8822, Change of Address, with the IRS. They will need to complete Parts II and III. To get Form 8822, go to www.irs.gov/eo and click on “Forms and Publications.”

There is a short list of information the IRS will ask for with this new “electronic postcard” filing system:

  • Organization’s name
  • Any other names your organization uses
  • Organization’s mailing address
  • Organization’s Web site address (if applicable)
  • Organization’s employer identification number (EIN)
  • Name and address of a principal officer of your organization
  • Organization’s annual tax period
  • A statement that your organization’s annual gross receipts are still normally $25,000 or less
  • If applicable, indicate if your organization is going out of business

Meanwhile, make sure your clubs have EIN’s, constitutions/bylaws, a club charter and they file an annual financial report with your office. And, please make them aware of these updates!

I’ll keep you posted as I receive additional information. — Dale Leidheiser

Trainer’s Toolbox – KIDPOWER

The Volunteer Workteam needs your help in promoting the next Trainer’s Toolbox. The date is Sept. 13 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. A brochure about KIDPOWER is attached and features learning activities that create a foundation of emotional safety for yourself and others. You’ll learn how to assess personal safety concerns and make realistic plans, and use these skills to prevent most bullying, molestation, assault and abduction.

This will be a valuable program for Extension professionals who encounter highly charged situations involving conflict with, or between, others; school personnel, volunteers, athletic coaches, athletic umpires, and youth development professionals from all youth serving organizations. Please promote this as broadly as possible to organizations, mailing lists, coalitions and collaborations, and others who can benefit from this program! — Dale Leidheiser

This may tie in with 4-H early-fall programming. Or, share with your FCS colleagues.

This year Family Day will be celebrated on Sept. 24, 2007 (4th Monday in September). The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University created Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children to encourage parents to frequently eat dinner with their kids and be involved in their children’s lives.
